Airam’s standard LED lamps are now glass bulbs

10.2.2026

Our standard lamp series Onni, Oiva and Otso have all transitioned to glass bulbs. What does this change from traditional plastic-bodied SMD lamps to glass bulbs mean in practice?

SMD (Surface Mounted Diode) refers to small LED components mounted directly onto a circuit board. LED lamps made with SMD technology can be recognised by their enclosed plastic neck and plastic diffuser. Lamps with a plastic neck do not emit light towards the base. Depending on the luminaire, the shadow created by the neck may appear as a dark edge in the light beam. Shadows may also occur in luminaires where the lamp is installed base down – a common feature in many decorative table lamps.

SMD lamps with a plastic neck have also not been particularly attractive in open luminaires where the light source is clearly visible. LEDs have a long lifetime, and over time the surface of plastic-bodied lamps may even begin to yellow.

As LED technology has evolved, Airam has decided to transition its standard lamp ranges to full glass bulbs. These ranges include:

  • Onni, emitting warm white light (2700 K)
  • Oiva, emitting white light (3000 K)
  • Otso, emitting cool white light (4000 K)

A full glass bulb is a beautiful light source

Each standard lamp family includes both clear and opal glass bulbs, as well as dimmable options. Dimmable lamps are marked with a DIM symbol on the packaging. The wide lamp families cover the most common bulb shapes and base types suitable for home lighting.

The change does not affect light output – the lamps shine just as brightly as before. Instead, we now offer beautifully designed lamps reminiscent of traditional incandescent bulbs, emitting light evenly in all directions (360°). A glass bulb does not create uneven shadows in the light beam, and light is also emitted towards the base. Inside the bulb, a LED filament – the light-producing “wire” – provides the illumination.

Glass bulbs are highly versatile, suitable not only for general lighting but also for open luminaires and interior décor where the lamp is visible. Glass is more durable than plastic and does not yellow over time. With this update, the energy efficiency of several lamps has also improved.
Airam LED lamps come with a three-year warranty against proof of purchase.

A full glass bulb combines the classic look of a traditional lamp with modern LED technology. This transition is a step towards more beautiful, practical and sustainable home lighting – lighting for everyday life.

Why glass bulbs?

Airam’s standard LED lamps now feature full glass bulbs.
Glass distributes light evenly in 360°, including towards the base, without creating unwanted shadows. Unlike plastic, glass does not yellow over time and looks elegant even in open luminaires.
