Sustainability at Airam

Our sustainability approach focuses on four themes: ethical and profitable business, social responsibility, environmental responsibility, and a responsible supply chain.

Ethical and profitable business

We constantly strive to develop our business operations in a profitable and ethical way and product and service range to meet our customers’ needs. Financially profitable business enables investment in social and environmental responsibility. It allows us to support society as a taxpayer, our employees as a salary payer, and be a reliable partner for our customers and business partners. Airam’s Board of Directors confirms the ethical principles that guide our operations as part of the company’s governance code. All Airam employees, management and board members must comply with Airam’s ethical principles.

Social responsibility

Locality, safe and healthy working conditions, and equal and fair treatment of people are examples of how we at Airam understand our social responsibility. We offer our employees meaningful work in a safe and inspiring environment.  We contribute to the wellbeing of society by utilising and developing Finnish expertise and as an active participant in our local community. Equality is one of our core values. We are committed to promoting equality and preventing discrimination both in our own operations and throughout our supply chain.

Environmental responsibility

We are determined to reduce our impact on the environment, both in our operations and in our finished products – all the way from design to recycling. We calculate our emissions each year according to the GHG greenhouse gas accounting protocol, and we have set the emissions reduction target that has been validated by the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative. We are aiming for a 42% reduction in our own direct and purchased energy emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 2030 compared to the base year of 2021. In addition, we are committed to measuring and reducing emissions in our value chain (scope 3).

The majority of our emissions come from energy consumption that occurs when our customers use our lighting and other electrically powered products. This the reason why we focus on developing products, solutions and processes that support mitigating the impact of the climate change. Energy-efficient products enable our customers to reduce their electricity consumption. The introduction of LED light has improved the energy consumption of lighting dramatically.  In addition to efficient light sources, energy can be used more efficiently and thus contribute to sparing the environment through wireless lighting control, dimmer and time switches, motion sensors, and various smart solutions.

Responsible supply chain

Our responsibility for people, the economy and the environment does not end within our own walls. We develop the sustainability of our supply chain working together with long-term subcontractors and partners.

Our products are manufactured in Finland, Europe and Asia. Procurement chains down to raw materials extend even further.  We recognize the challenges associated with long supply chains, such as the difficulties of traceability and the limited actual opportunities to influence the origin, production conditions or environmental effects of the rare raw materials needed in electrical and electronic equipment. We monitor the ethics, human rights and environmental impact of production in high-risk countries through amfori BSCI audits.

Commitments and certificates

By making commitments, we want to express our determination for developing our operations and products to be more sustainable over time. Our management system complies with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards for quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management. Airam has joined the United Nations’ Global Compact initiative, and we are a member of amfori BSCI and BEPI. We require our business partners to commit to amfori’s Code of Conduct, which is based on Universal Declaration of Human Rights, environmental principles and labour rights. We achieved the silver level in our second EcoVadis assessment, conducted in the summer of 2025. This level is achieved by only 15% of the companies assessed. We report annually about our sustainability-related work through the Global Compact’s Communication on Progress (CoP) report and about development of our climate program and emissions with CDP report.
