Bathroom lighting – from daily routines to relaxation

Bathrooms and wet rooms require special attention when planning lighting. The lighting must support everyday routines and cleaning efficiently, while also creating a calming atmosphere for bathing and sauna sessions.

Add multiple lighting layers to the bathroom

A luminaire installed near the mirror can provide indirect lighting throughout the bathroom. Dimmable luminaires allow you to instantly change the atmosphere of the space.

For applying make-up, natural-looking light and good colour rendering are particularly important. Pay attention to luminaire placement and avoid strong overhead lighting that creates harsh facial shadows.

Glossy materials reflect light

Bathrooms often feature durable tiled surfaces designed to last for years. Since tiles and fixed lighting are rarely changed, careful planning is essential.

The glossier the surface, the more it reflects light. If reflections are not considered during the lighting design process, the result may become unpleasantly glaring. Dark matte surfaces, on the other hand, absorb light and therefore require more powerful illumination.

Atmosphere is created with soft and indirect light

In a sauna, lighting serves both as practical cleaning light and as part of a relaxing sauna atmosphere. High temperatures make saunas a challenging environment for LED technology, although the technology continues to improve.

Electrical installations in saunas are governed by specific safety standards. No electrical devices other than the heater itself may be installed within 0.5 metres of the sauna heater. This protected zone extends all the way to the ceiling.

Outside this area, up to one metre above floor level, no specific ambient temperature requirements are defined. However, luminaires must still be selected according to the expected operating temperature.

Airam LED sauna lamps and luminaires are designed to be installed at a maximum height of one metre, where temperatures remain moderate.

The Airam Saunaled luminaire can be dimmed using an LED dimmer, allowing it to provide both bright practical light and softer ambient lighting. Its wooden shade is made in Finland and can be oiled to achieve the desired tone.

Only splash-proof luminaires are suitable for wet rooms

Electrical safety must always be considered in wet areas. Luminaires must be at least splash-proof and positioned at a safe distance from water sources. Installation distances and enclosure ratings must be followed carefully.

The IP rating consists of the abbreviation IP (International Protection) followed by two digits. The first digit indicates protection against solid objects and dust, while the second indicates protection against water and moisture. If the letter X replaces a number, no specific requirement applies to that feature.

Examples of common IP ratings for Airam luminaires:

  • IP20: Indoor luminaire for dry interior spaces only. No protection against water.
  • IP44: Suitable for bathrooms and both indoor and outdoor use. Protected against splashing water from all directions.
  • IP65: Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, such as bathrooms or carports. Dust-tight and protected against water jets from all directions.
