A well-lit kitchen is the heart of the home
The kitchen is the centre of the home, and lighting plays a key role. Kitchen lighting needs to support both cooking and socialising. In addition to general lighting, multiple lighting layers help create a functional and inviting space.
Effective lighting is not created by a single fixture, but by a carefully planned combination of light sources:
- general lighting for everyday use
- bright white or cool white light for worktops
- one or more light sources with dimming to create warm ambience

General lighting for everyday tasks
A single ceiling light in the centre of the room is not enough for all kitchen activities. If general lighting relies only on a ceiling fixture, the light falls behind you while working, creating shadows on the worktop.
Dry goods and essentials are easier to find when lighting is also directed into cupboards and drawers. This can be achieved with internal lighting – LED strips are an excellent solution. Alternatively, directional spotlights can be installed in front of tall cabinets.
Light your worktops
Good kitchen lighting makes cooking safer and more efficient. As kitchen tools are often sharp, proper visibility is essential.
LED strips offer a clean and modern way to illuminate worktops. Consider the following:
• LED light is strong and directional. On glossy surfaces, reflections may cause glare – use an opal aluminium profile.
• Angle profiles allow light to be directed at 45° onto the work area without glare.
• COB LED strips provide smooth, dot-free light.
• A refined finish can be achieved by recessing the strip, using cover panels or aluminium profiles.
• LED strips can also be installed above cabinets to create indirect ambient lighting.
Power sockets are essential in kitchens, and some under-cabinet lights include additional outlets.

Lighting creates a welcoming dining experience
The dining table is used daily but also for gatherings and celebrations. Softer, dimmable lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere – and even makes food look more appealing.
The recommended installation height for a pendant above the table is 60–80 cm from the tabletop.
Layered lighting
A well-designed kitchen includes three lighting layers:
1. General lighting
Provides even illumination throughout the space.
2. Task lighting
Focused light on work surfaces:
• improves cooking efficiency
• reduces mistakes
• increases safety
3. Ambient lighting
Creates atmosphere:
• indirect light above and below cabinets
• dimming allows instant mood changes
Practical kitchen lighting tips
Light colour has a strong impact on both the room and how food looks:
• 3000–4000 K: ideal for general and task lighting
• Good colour rendering (CRI) ensures natural-looking ingredients
• Ambient lighting is warmer or dimmer
- Position lights so your body does not cast shadows
- Avoid glare – especially from LED strips on glossy surfaces
- Choose dimmable and adjustable solutions
- Ensure different light sources can be controlled separately
