Worried About Electricity Prices? Here’s How to Easily Reduce Your Energy Consumption
Electricity prices are once again a much-discussed topic. By choosing LED lamps for your home and using light wisely, you can reduce your electricity bill without compromising on comfort.
Electricity prices are once again a much-discussed topic. Although it is impossible to predict price levels for the coming winter, you can already take steps to reduce your own electricity consumption. Lighting is one of the easiest areas in which to improve energy efficiency – especially if you are still using old halogen lamps or fluorescent tubes. By choosing LED lamps for your home and using light wisely, you can reduce your electricity bill without compromising on comfort.
Replace old lamps with LEDs
If you still have old halogen or incandescent lamps in your home, replacing them with LED lamps is one of the most effective ways to save energy. For example, a traditional 60-watt incandescent lamp can be replaced with an LED lamp of around 8 watts that produces the same amount of light.
Example calculation
Let’s assume that a home has 10 lamps that are used for an average of four hours a day.
Old 60 W lamps
Annual consumption: 876 kWh
New 8 W LED lamps
Annual consumption: 117 kWh
Savings
759 kWh per year
If the total price of electricity, including distribution charges and taxes, is €0.20/kWh, for example:
759 kWh × €0.20 = approximately €152 saved per year
The more the lights are used, the faster the investment pays for itself.
LED technology is constantly evolving. The latest energy class A lamps produce more light with even lower energy consumption. In many homes, lighting is used every day for years. This means that a difference of just a few watts per lamp can add up to significant savings over time.

If you replace ten 10 W LED lamps with highly energy-efficient 5 W models:
- Saving per lamp: 5 W
- Across the whole home: 50 W
- Usage: 4 hours per day
Over a year, this saves 73 kWh. At an electricity price of €0.20/kWh, the saving is approximately €15 per year.
Although the amount may not sound significant, the long lifespan of a lamp often makes the more energy-efficient option the most sensible choice.
Not everything needs to be lit at full brightness
Good lighting does not mean making everything as bright as possible. A home can often feel more inviting when several smaller light sources are used instead of lighting the entire room with one powerful ceiling luminaire. Dining, watching television, cleaning and working all require different amounts of light.
For example, try:
- a USB-rechargeable reading light beside the sofa
- a table luminaire for your workspace
- a dimmable lamp for mood lighting in the living room
- LED candles or other decorative lights for autumn and winter evenings
By directing light where it is needed, you avoid wasting energy.
Use light only when you need it. Timers, motion sensors and dusk switches can help with this. They allow you to set lights to switch on only when it gets dark, so you do not have to remember to switch them off.valon syttymään vain hämärän tullen ja pimeässä, eikä valon sammuttamisesta tarvitse huolehtia.

Create atmosphere at little cost
There is no need to give up Christmas or seasonal lighting because of energy consumption either. Winters in the Nordic countries are so dark that we need a little sparkle not only to brighten our days but also to improve safety outdoors! Modern LED decorative lights create atmosphere in the garden, on the balcony and inside the home at very little cost. Using one LED decorative light throughout the winter season costs roughly the same as a cup of coffee at a service station.
Example calculation
A 10-watt LED light set is used for 8 hours a day for 45 days:
10 W × 8 h × 45 days = 3,600 Wh = 3.6 kWh
If the total electricity price is estimated at €0.20/kWh:
3.6 kWh × €0.20 = €0.72
Using one LED light set throughout the Christmas season therefore costs less than one euro.
LED candles create atmosphere – without smoke, without flames
Small changes, big impact
It is impossible to predict how electricity prices will develop, but you can influence your own consumption every day. Just a few simple measures can help reduce your electricity bill:
- Replace old lamps with LEDs
- Choose energy class A LED light sources
- Use the right amount of light in the right place
- Adjust the brightness according to your needs
- Use timers for outdoor and mood lighting
When lighting is planned smartly, you can enjoy a comfortable atmosphere and good visibility at home all year round – regardless of how electricity prices develop in the future.
